Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM for short) in Mayan means ‘Cave of Stone Sepulcher’. This wonderful cave system is found in the foothills of the Mayan mountains.
This famous cave contains four skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware left by the Mayas. One of the skeletons is that of a young girl, her bones are completely covered by the natural limestone processes of the cave leaving them with a sparkling appearance.
Ceremonies including human sacrifices were carried out here to appease the gods more than 1000 years ago.
Your Guide will take you back over 1,000 years in history as you learn about the Maya and witness first-hand how the ancients used these amazing caverns.
You will begin in Placencia on a drive that will take us up the peninsula and onto the mainland. You’ll drive through the farmland area of Belize and up into the Maya Mountains.
After lunch, the adventure begins. A flat walk through the rainforest, then crossing three creeks will bring you to the cave entrance. You’ll be climbing, swimming wading, and hiking through a river and into the cave toward the ceremonial chamber. After a tour that lasts two and a half hours, it’s time to return to the beach in Placencia with dreams of the Maya.
