How to Become a PADI Open Water Certified Diver?

Becoming an Open Water Diver is easy, no prior experience with scuba diving is necessary. During the course you will learn about scuba diving principles and terminology here at the dive shop, then learn basic scuba skills in confined water (or pool-like environment) with one of our highly trained PADI instructors. When you’re ready, you will make four open water dives with your instructor supporting you every step of the way.

Become Open Water Certified In 3 Days

The PADI Open Water course consists of three parts: Academics, Confined Water, and  4 Open Water Dive Sessions. Each is designed to make the course engaging and fun.  We know you time on vacation is limited, so we have designed the course to take at least 3 days to complete.

Day 1

Complete the Academics

On the first day, you will complete the academic session of the course, where you will learn the theory of scuba diving. This is done at the dive shop by watching the PADI Training Videos and going over the Open Water Manual followed by Quizzes and Exams to be sure you understand the material. This day typically starts at 9:00 AM and ends around 5:00 PM. If possible, it’s helpful to pick up the open water manual the day before, but not necessary.

Day 2

Complete Confine Water Plus Dives 1 & 2

On the second day, you will complete the confine water session of the course, where you will learn underwater skills for safe diving. These are done in the shallow bay (7ft/2m) of one of the nearby Cayes (small island). After completing the confine water skills, you will do a shallow shore dive from the beach of the Caye for dive 1 (24ft/8m).  Then,  after lunch and surface interval, you will do a boat dive for dive 2 (40ft/12m). These are done on our Local Reef Dive at either the Silk Cayes or Laughing Bird Caye. This day typically begins at 9:00 AM and ends around 3:00 PM.

Day 3

Complete Dives 3 & 4

On the third day, you will log the remaining dives 3 and 4 to complete the certification. These are two boat dives at a depth of 60ft/18m. These dives are also done on our Local Reef Dives, and typically begin at 9:00 AM and end around 3:00 PM. After completing these dives you will be PADI Open Water Certified, and your certification will recognize worldwide!

If you're visiting with family and friend they would be able to join you on Days 2 and 3 as certified divers or snorkelers on the same boat.

Are You Fit For Scuba Diving?

Download and fill out this mandatory Medical Questionnaire, which will assess if you meet the minimum physical requirements to safely participate in this sport. If you answer "YES"  to any of the questions listed, the Medical Questionnaire must be completely filled and signed by a physician.

You'll also need to fill out a Certified Liability Release Form. Remember to bring your completed medical questionnaire and the certified diver liability release form to the dive shop.

I had a great experience doing my Open Water Diver certification with Seahorse Dive Shop. My instructor, Andres, kept it fun and made it easy to learn and practice all the skills. We saw a variety of locations on the two days of dives (went to Laughing Bird and Silk Cayes) with lots of wildlife. The included lunch and drinks were also very good. Would highly recommend Seahorse for anyone else diving or thinking about getting certified here!
